The other day I was eating in our company cafeteria when I overheard a woman telling her lunch companion the following story about her son’s swim class, which had the unfortunate luck to be at an outside pool when it was raining. “Well, anyway, part way through one little girl said she thought she saw lightning. The instructor got everybody out of the pool right away. Smart little girl. I wish I had told my son that trick, about what to say to get the class cut short.”

What?! I nearly sprayed soup all over myself. It was all I could do to stay in my seat and not say something to her. “Excuse me miss, do you mean to tell me that you regret not teaching your son how to cheat? You wish you had told him how to lie to get out of an undesired chore? How do you think that attitude would serve him once he got out of school and into the workforce?”

I try to have a positive outlook on the future of man, I really do. But at the end of the day I think C3PO was right: “We’re doomed.”
